What is Short Term Accommodation, including respite?

Short Term Accommodation, including respite, is support for when you need to live out of home for a short period. This service is designed to give you a temporary living arrangement while offering much-needed respite to your carers. STA funding can be utilised for respite to support both you and your support network, giving your carers a well-deserved break from their caregiving responsibilities.

Short Term Accommodation includes:

  • Personal Care: Assistance with personal care tasks tailored to your individual needs.
  • Accommodation: Comfortable and safe living arrangements during your stay.
  • Food: Nutritious meals provided to meet dietary requirements.
  • Activities: Engaging activities that you and the provider agree upon to enrich your stay.

NDIS funding allows for Short Term Accommodation, providing flexibility to utilize your STA funding in a way that best suits your needs; for instance, you may choose to use it in a block of up to 14 consecutive days or opt for one weekend each month. The funding for STA is based on standard rates outlined in the NDIS pricing arrangements and price limits.

A short stay away from home can be a beneficial experience in several ways:

  • Try New Things: It offers you the chance to explore new activities and experiences that you may not have had the opportunity to try before.
  • Make New Friends: STA can provide a social environment where you can make new friends and build relationships with others.
  • Develop New Skills: You may have the opportunity to develop new skills through organized activities and support.
  • Maintain Your Living Situation: This temporary accommodation can help maintain your current living situation by allowing your informal support network to take a break and recharge.

STA as a Stepping Stone to Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Staying in STA provides an invaluable opportunity for personal growth and can serve as a critical stepping stone to Supported Independent Living (SIL). By participating in STA, you gain the chance to build essential life skills that will help you transition to more independent living arrangements.

Our experienced and trained LCA staff are dedicated to supporting your development in various areas, equipping you with the tools necessary to live independently. Some examples of daily life skills you can learn during your stay include:

  • Personal Care Skills: Learning how to manage personal hygiene and grooming independently.
  • Meal Preparation: Gaining skills in planning and cooking nutritious meals.
  • Household Management: Understanding how to manage household tasks, such as cleaning and laundry.
  • Budgeting and Money Handling: Developing skills to effectively manage personal finances and budgeting for expenses.
  • Social Skills: Enhancing communication and interpersonal skills to foster relationships with peers and the community.
  • Health and Safety Awareness: Understanding basic health and safety practices in a home environment.
  • Time Management: Learning how to manage time effectively to balance various activities and responsibilities.

These skills not only boost your confidence but also empower you to take charge of your living arrangements in the future. STA serves as a supportive environment where you can experiment, learn, and grow, facilitating a smooth transition into independent living.
